Fleet Operational Status

Below is a list of the current fleet status. Click on the model link for a picture of the rocket. The fleet is getting new additions to replace some long serving rockets that have reached the end of their service. If you're just getting into rocketry and would like to get a feel for what's it like I would suggest starting off with a model like the Estes Executioner. This flies on an "E" motor and is a great starter for learning how to build a rocket. I've built several of these in various configuations. It is a very good rocket design and flies well on the Aerotech Econojet F engines. It's versatile and easily customizable. A real beauty to watch. I usually fly most of my fleet at the "G" level and I prefer to custom build most of my rockets, but will still build a kit every now and then.. I have several higher power rockets that can fly on H, I and J motors and now that I achieved my Level 1 certification I'm looking forward to getting my Level 2 sometime in 2011 and continue to launch bigger vehicles.

Active Fleet

Mfg. Model Name Status Comments
Public Missles Intruder Eagle 1 Active Successful Level 1 Certification on March 16, 2008. Flies on "H" and "I" Motors. Can fly on a "J" if required. Won't do an L2 Cert on this one, but build a new "J"/"K" Motor rocket.
Scratchbuilt Stingray Stingray Active My first totally designed and built from scratch rocket. 45" tall, 4 fin, boattail design. Flies on a "G" reloadable A beautiful design. Notice the boattail. Strictly G60W or G77R. Bad zipper on this one, but restored it. Look for a future article on that coming to a rocket magazine soon!
Scratchbuilt Stryker Stryker Active Total scratch build. Custom cut fins. Original design. Flies on a "G" motor (Single Use or Reloadable). I've been flying this on F-20 7W. The right motor. Flies great.
Aerotech G-Force Explorer Active Beautiful rocket. Maiden flight March 22, 2008 on a G40W-4. Good flight in strong winds. Second flight same day. Nice slow climb to about 800ft. This rocket continues to be a steady and reliable performer.
Mad Cow Rocketry DX3 Sky Avenger Active 48" tall, 3 fin, flies on a "G" motor - slight modification to the original kit specs. Added a boattail to the design. Nice rocket, flies great.
Estes Executioner Seven of Nine LIves Active Rebuild of the Original Odyssey. Using the existing fin-can with new upper tubing and some overall strengthening. Flies on an "E" engines per the original spec, but the rebuild has added some weight. Rocket is slightly underpowered, but makes for a nice slow climb off the pad up to about 400 feet. Like watching a Saturn V move slowly and then build up speed. Back to back core samples on this. Noticed the motor tube has ripped. This is a frequent problem after several launches on those paper thin Estes motor tubes.I've made major repairs and it's ready to fly yet again. This is the rocket that won't go away. New name for this rocket...Seven of Nine Lives. This would have flown great on the old Aerotech F-21 motor.
Estes Executioner Super E Active Just completed. A kitbash of the stock Estes kit with two boosters added. Flies on an E9-6 and two E9-P motors. Second one of these I've built in this configuration. A cool one to watch. Had a nice maiden flight. Learned my lesson and reinforced the motor tube during construction.
Estes Big Daddy Intrepid 1 Active Maiden flight on March 22, 2008 on an Aerotech E30T. Quick off the pad. Straight and true in strong winds. Nice little rocket.
Estes Executioner FirebalI Active Damaged on chute failure - Internal motor tube damage. Model has two boosters attached. Runs on 3 "E" engines. After trying out a motor tube repair on the Seven of Nine Lives rocket I figured I'd try it on this one also. The motor tube was completely blown in this one making it impossible to "insert" a replacement. Gutted the fin can and replaced the entire motor tube assembly. Ready to fly again.
ASP (Aerospace Speciality Products) V-2 V-2 Active Small V-2 from ASP. Comes with wood nosecone and tail making it good weight for its size. Parachute and wadding fit in small middle tube. Flies on D or E engines. Flew this on an "E"....Wow!
Scratchbuilt V2 V2 Design Building a small V2 model that will fly on an "E" motor. Just worked up the specs and created fin templates. Should be ready to take its maiden flight in March.
Loc/Precision V-2 V-2 Under Construction Expected completion March 2009. Wanted to do a L1 cert on this, but opting for a more traditional model for cert flight.
Mad Cow Rocketry Super DX3 TBD Under Construction Nice kit. Just started construction
Rocket Dynamics Moonraker TBD Acquisition Really like the look of this kit. Looking forward to building this out and giving it the standard fleet paint scheme. Seriously thinking of using this as my L2 Cert rocket.

Retired Fleet

Mfg. Model Name Status Comments
Estes Executioner Odyssey Retired Cumulative Damage - Rip in tube on ballistic descent.
Estes Executioner Odyssey II Retired Cumulative Damage - No immediate repairs planned. This model has had great flights and has been in and out of retirement. Would like to rebuild, but this rocket has served well and deserves a rest.
Estes Executioner Titan VII CATO Damaged on maiden flight - One center engine, six boosters. A few engines failed to ignite. Rocket landed under power ripping tube 3/4 of the way around.
Estes Executioner Odyssey III Lost Lost on maiden flight. Rocket had a high beautiful flight. Exceeded expectations and drifted out of range. Rocket located high in a tree in unreachable terrain.
Estes Executioner Odyssey IV Lost Lost on second flight. Winds were at 15mph. Rocket flew straight and true on ascent with significant height on an Aerotech F-21/4 motor. The rocket drifted above the treeline well into wooded terrain.
Estes Executioner Odyssey V CATO Kitbash of the Estes Executioner to handle a "G" reloadable motor. On launch there was a "blow-by" that created flames pouring out of each end of the rocket on ascent. After analyzing the small video I have it appears the blow-by started immediately pushing the nosecone off as the pressure built up and eventually sending the flames from the burning motor straight up the tube.

The mid/high power fleet will stands at nine flight-ready rockets with several more planned or under construction. Now that my Level 1 certification flight was successful I will on getting to get a Level 2 certification most likely on the soon to be built Rocket Dynamics MoonRaker. Backup would be my L1 Cert Intruder. A "J" motor is at the upper end of the spec for the Intruder, but I did reinforce at critical parts during construction with that in mind.

Future Projects: Before 2009 is over I want to build and fly a full space shuttle stack (tank, boosters and orbiter). I've got my eye on the Sheri's Hot Rocket version. The shuttle is R/C.
