All About Who?

A long time ago in galaxy far far away.......well, I got the long time ago part right. Ever see those sci-fi movies or shows where the character leaves behind his memories and consciousness in the computer? Transferring his/her thoughts, ideas, who they were into a machine in the hope that some future generation will find a way to put them back? I guess my site is sort of like that scene from the movies - an attempt to put my thoughts and ideas in a place that will survive long after I do. From time to time I'll update the site to add more content and more about the things that make me tick.

I was born and grew up in Baltimore, Maryland. during a time where the space race was going strong. While so many other issues were brewing in the '60's, the only thing in my little world was what was happening outside it - up in space. It was a great time for the space program. The quest for space, the manned missions and the reflection of that in what we saw on TV and the movies. I remember sitting alone, just nine years old in the McHenry movie theater in Baltimore watching 2001 A Space Odyssey - so moved by it I stayed twice. The look, the feel was what it was like to be in space and I wanted to be there. That was my dream.

My love of space and stars will be with me forever. As a kid, my mom would subscribe to the science annuals and space yearbooks. I couldn't wait for those books to show up! I'd read them over and over. If only the Internet were around back then! We were one of the lucky few on the block to have a full set of encyclopedias and I would sit there for hours reading the volumes front to back. I just needed to know and still do. An insatiable intellectual curiosity about science, history, where we've been and we're we going.

...and I never did make it into space - but hopefully with the work of Burt Rutan in SpaceShipOne I'm a little closer or perhaps I'll pull an "Astronaut Farmer" and build a rocket in the garage and send myself toward the stars. The thought has crossed my mind.

I'm working on a Masters in Planetary Science to accompany my Bachelors in Space Studies with Honors from the American Military University. After I got married in 1985, we moved to Manchester, Maryland where I ran for Mayor. Though unsuccessful in my first political outing it was nonetheless a great experience. From door to door campaigning, interviews with the press and televised debates it was a microcosm of what it would be like to run on a larger scale. I've contemplated that over the years and look forward to one day getting back on the campaign trail (I'm thinking a retirement in Florida by the Kennedy Space Center and then run for Congress as an advocate for an increased space program is in the future). You can read more about my thoughts on issues of the day at "The Random Musings of Spacemike".

My days of dreaming are not over. I have a drive to get things done and an endless stream of ideas. I am a left-handed, ADD-type -- a powerful combination of creativity with a brain that only knows how to multitask an endless stream of thoughts simultaneously. Non-ADD people have no idea what it's like. I envy those that can singularly focus on a task, that's just not me. The lists of ideas and things to work on just keep coming. There's just never enough time to get them all done. Check out my projects page to learn about a few of them. There is way more beyond this, these are just the highlights and my space-themed projects.

Photography is another key interest for me. My camera is usually with me wherever I go. I am always looking for that perfect photo. I have taken thousands and thousands...and thousands of photos. I keep a small amount on Flckr. Of all the ways we can spend money, buying a camera and capturing snapshots in time of things we have seen and places we have been is putting it to pretty good use.

As you make your way through the site you'll learn about my wide variety of interests. From space, rockets, sci-fi, z cars, politics, photography, aviation and history. This is just the tip of the iceberg. Curiosity makes me want to know as much as I can about science, climate, energy, economics, religion, cultures, art, physics to name a few. Nothing escapes my realm of intellectual curiosity. There are so many more things that I'm interested in that I haven't added to the site, but maybe in the future.
